A Mother's Day Fic - A Whole Garden Full
Title: A Whole Garden Full
Pairing: Sean/Elijah (Sanctuary Universe)
Rating: G
Word Count: 764
Summary: On a Mother's Day call to Anna, Sean talks about the loves of his life.
Dedication: To my Mom. I'll never stop missing you. ♥ And for all mothers everywhere, whether they mother children, pets or just those in need. Thank you for giving of yourselves and sharing your love.

When Anna answered the phone on the first ring, Sean knew his mother was in the kitchen. He could picture her reaching for the wall extension, still with a rotary dial, and a bright yellow color that matched her kitchen wallpaper. She uttered a musical “Hello?” that always made him smile.
“Happy Mother’s Day, Mom.”
“Thank you, Sweetie. I was hoping to hear from you before I had to start fixing lunch for your father.”
“How are you and Dad doing?”
“We’re fine, nothing new to report. Thank you for the beautiful flowers you sent, Sean. They’re sitting right in the middle of the kitchen table. They’re lovely, but you shouldn’t have been so extravagant.”
“Nothing’s too extravagant for my Mom. I’m just sorry we couldn’t be there in person to give them to you.”
“I’m still hoping you and Elijah will come for a visit. Are you two doing okay?”
“Couldn’t be better. He sends his Mother’s Day greetings, too.”
“He’s not there with you?”
“No, he’s outside talking to his mother.”
There was a slight pause before Anna questioned, “Talking to her? Didn’t you tell me—“
“Don’t worry, Elijah doesn’t see dead people. He missed being able to visit his Mom’s grave, so I planted a rose bush on the side of the cabin and put up a plaque in her memory. It gives Elijah a place to go when he needs to feel close to her.”
“That was a very thoughtful thing to do, Sean.”
“It was no big deal.”
“I’ll bet Elijah thought it was a big deal.”
“He was very touched,” Sean remembered. “In fact, he cried, but they were happy tears. I was happy to be able to do something like that for him.”
“So when I’m gone, will you plant a rose bush for me?” Anna asked.
“A whole garden full of them.”
“You’re a good son, and a good partner.”
“I try to be.”
“And I’m sure Elijah appreciates it. You’re really happy, aren’t you, son?”
“More than I thought possible. I’m incredibly lucky, Mom. Most people never get one great love in their lives. I’ve had two, and I never saw it coming.”
“Love’s like that.”
“The day I found Elijah here in the cabin, hurt and in trouble, I knew I had to help him, but my only thought was to do what I could for him and send him on his way. So I took care of him, but the longer he stayed, the less I wanted him to leave. I certainly never dreamed…”
“Hurt/comfort turning to love is how many of the world’s greatest romances started.”
“It’s certainly how ours started. I’ll always treasure what I had with Daniel, but I never expected to feel that way about someone else again.”
“I’m so happy for you, my son. Be sure and give Elijah my love, will you?”
“You bet.”
“And when it’s time to plant those bushes, make sure the roses are yellow.”
Sean smiled. “I’ll make a note. Give my love to Dad and Mac whenever you hear from him.”
“I always do.”
After he hung up, Sean went outside to find Elijah, who was just coming up the front steps to meet him. “Did you have a nice talk with your Mom?” he asked.
Elijah nodded. “And you?”
“Mom liked the flowers, but of course, she thought I spent too much.”
“I hope you told her she was worth it.”
“I did. She sends her love, and mentioned again how much she and Dad would enjoy a visit from us.”
“Is that ever going to happen, Sean?”
“When the time is right.”
“That’s not a real answer."
“It’s the best I can do for now. By the way, I told her about the rose bush we planted for your Mom, and she put in an order for one for herself after she’s gone.”
“Pink or red roses?” Elijah asked.
“Actually, her preference is yellow. I promised her I’d plant her a whole garden full.”
“I hope that’s a promise you don’t have to keep for many more years.”
“I hope you’re right about that, but for now, I’ll appreciate her while I can.”
“As long as you promise to keep sharing her with me.”
“That’s a promise I’m happy to keep.”
Elijah raised an imaginary glass. “To our Moms!”
“I’ll definitely drink to that, but since we don’t have any champagne, I did just make a pitcher of lemonade. Will that do?”
Elijah murmured under his breath. “You can take the boy out of the farm…”
“I heard that.”
